The Origin

The camelids, originating from an ancestor called ‘Protylopus’, emerged around 40-45 million years ago. Approximately 3 million years ago, the ‘Paracamelus’ migrated to Asia via the Bering Strait, diversifying into two species: the two-humped camel and the dromedary, which later spread across Africa. During the same period, some varieties of North American camelids crossed the Isthmus of Panama into South America. Of these, only the ‘Hemiauchenia’ survived, eventually giving rise to the contemporary species of Guanaco and Vicuña.
