The Chaccu Ritual

The Vicuñas, considered sacred in the Incan Empire, were carefully sheared and released during the emotive ‘Chaccu’, an ancestral ceremony that remains alive to this day, and which allows for the preservation and protection of the species.

The Ceremony

During the Incan Empire, the Chaccu was an event of great cultural value. After the herds were captured, a young and graceful Vicuña was carefully selected and given a small cut in the ear. Its blood filled the kero, to be offered to the Apus. The Inca, from a majestic stone platform, took the kero and a handful of coca leaves, and established a spiritual connection with the Gods. Finally, he cast the sheared fleeces into the sky, unleashing a magical chorus of voices and dances around him.
